Notes from the Teacher:

Thank you all who were able to join us for Parent Involvement Day.  By no means is it a typical day in the life at Wines, but I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse of some of the routines.  Also, thank you all for the generous donations for our Valentines' mailboxes.  All of the paper, stickers, hearts and glitter made decorating extra FUN!
It's a challenging time of year to stay focused and healthy.  We've been working on new routines and lessons to stay motivated.  The First Graders have been developing their questioning and teamwork skills in pairs and small groups.

Winter Clothing 101

Tis the season to have LOTS of gear at school and to have numerous viruses wreaking havoc on classrooms and homes everywhere.  Washing our hands and getting dressed to go outside becomes its own part of the curriculum.  Here are some helpful tips: Have your child practice putting on his or her winter gear, especially the tricky snow pants, eye-hooks and zippers.  The more independent she or he is, the less likely to be cold and wet (or frustrated) due to a clothing issue.
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL!!!!!!!
Please make sure to label all of your child's gear with his or her name.  It's hard to tell the difference between all of the black and blue snowpants and boots!!
Reading Workshop

We just completed our Informational Text Study.  Your children ended by forming Book Clubs based on what they wanted to learn and research.  Not only did they use their knowledge of Text Features but also chose other books from the Library to compare and contrast with what they had read in class.  We hope you enjoyed their Book Club Presentations.

Word Study
ABC.png
You will see a list of 5-10 words come home on Mondays.  These are words that your child has chosen to study for the week.  Ask him or her to show you some of the strategies that we practice to learn new words- like sorts, rainbow writing, Word Wall Brain Gym, etc ...  The goal is for your child to recognize visual and auditory patterns in words so that they become automatic.  Pointing out patterns that look and sound different is VERY important!  For example, you expect said to be spelled sed.

High-Frequency Words

*Words that we read and write often.

The goal is that all words are sight words for your children.  These high-frequency words

especially should be read and written automatically.  In class, we practice these by using magnetic letters, writing them in a variety of ways, and many kinesthetic ways to practice.  Please add the following lists to your child's toolbox.  He or she should be reading and writing them correctly to build automaticity.

**Your child will be bringing home games like Follow the Path and LOTTO. Please help him or her check/edit the spelling of the words.  Then let your child teach you how to play!!  This is a great way to practice reading and spelling words.
